Jennifer and Christopher Cook saw a need for a small grocery store in the downtown Altoona area. The up-and-coming downtown has a lot to offer, but there was nowhere to get fresh fruits and vegetables, deli meats, cheeses, fresh cut meat, and fresh ground sausage. Inspired by Big City living where there's a small grocery store in every neighborhood. You can just stop by and grab a few things for the day or get a whole week's worth of groceries. The original Market Basket was founded by my grandparents, Anthony and Lucy Petta, in 1946 on the corner of 3rd Street and 5th Avenue. Later, our cousins Mike and Helen Colombo took over.
